What If We’ve Been Looking Through the Wrong Lens?

I’ve always found it striking how differently we react to foods depending on their origin. Mention blueberries, kale, or spinach and people light up, seeing them as symbols of health and vitality. Mention liver, kidneys, tripe, skin, or a whole prey animal and the response often shifts to suspicion, as if these are somehow risky or old-fashioned.


This makes sense in our culture. For decades we’ve been bombarded with the message that colorful plant foods are the gold standard of nutrition. Government guidelines, ads, documentaries, and wellness influencers have drilled it into us. Those ideas don’t stay neatly in the human box. They spill over, carrying an unspoken moral weight. We have come to view vibrant plants as clean and virtuous, while raw animal organs feel graphic and chaotic.


So when we think about feeding dogs, the same assumptions follow automatically: if it’s “healthy” for us, it must be healthy for them. Blueberries for dogs. Spinach for dogs. The logic feels obvious, until you pause and ask a more fundamental question.

Are we actually feeding the animal in front of us, or are we projecting our own dietary beliefs and cultural comfort onto it?


Too often, I think we do the latter. We start with human nutritional trends (antioxidants, fiber, superfoods, calorie density) and then try to fit the dog into that framework. The dog’s evolutionary identity becomes an afterthought. Nutrition becomes a math problem instead of a biological relationship.


This is backwards.


We don’t approach other species this way. No one looks at a horse and starts calculating protein ratios before recognizing it as a grazing herbivore. No one debates vitamin content for a koala without first acknowledging its specialized diet of eucalyptus. Identity comes first. Feeding follows.


With dogs, we frequently reverse the order. We debate nutrient profiles before asking what kind of animal evolved to eat those nutrients. The result? A dog stops being seen as a predator with a particular history and becomes a collection of nutritional requirements waiting to be met. We mistake our psychological comfort for their biological necessity.


Step outside our modern lens and the disconnect becomes obvious. A wolf doesn’t forage for antioxidants. A wild canid consumes whole prey: muscle, organs, fat, skin, bone, connective tissue, blood, and all. That complete package shaped their teeth, jaws, digestive tract, and metabolism over millennia. Those “scary” animal parts aren’t fringe additions; they are the diet.


Yet in contemporary feeding conversations, across raw feeders, holistics, and industry professionals alike, these vital components often get side-eyed. Foods that were marginal or absent in canine evolutionary history are elevated as essential simply because they make us feel good to look at in a bowl. Again, this doesn’t mean a few vegetables are toxic or that every dog must eat identically. The deeper issue is the framework itself.


When we call something “healthy,” what do we actually mean? Healthy according to human nutritional dogma and aesthetic preferences? Or healthy in light of the species’ biology?


These aren’t the same question, and they explain why dog food debates so often go in circles. One side focuses on isolated nutrients and lab-formulated balance. The other starts with the animal’s nature, specifically its anatomy, behavior, and ecological role. Both matter, but they begin from different assumptions.


For me, the more useful starting point has always been the simpler one: Do we truly understand the animal standing in front of us? Before we reach for superfoods, supplements, or the latest human health trend, have we honestly reckoned with what a dog actually is?


Until identity leads the conversation, much of our talk about nutrition risks floating free from the biology it’s meant to serve. Once we correct the lens, many inherited assumptions start to look very different. The question stops being “Does this ingredient look healthy through a human filter?” and becomes “Does this make sense for the predator in my house?”


Only then can we have a clearer discussion about what truly belongs in the bowl.
